Color character

The CineLook ARRI Natural transform opens with a small positive exposure offset of 0.08, enough to lift a slightly underexposed frame without washing it out. Contrast gains 3 points, a modest step that firms separations without hardening edges. Most of the shaping sits at the ends of the scale. Highlights are pulled down 32 points, so bright skies, windows and specular surfaces hold their detail instead of clipping, while shadows rise 14 points and open dense areas into readable texture. Highlight Rolloff at 48 softens the shoulder further, stretching the transition into white. Color stays close to source: saturation drops 4 points and vibrance rises 7, which gives muted colors presence while already vivid ones stay largely put. Grain is added at 3, a light and even texture rather than a visible pattern. No color matrix or custom curve is applied, so hue relationships stay where the camera put them, and overall shape comes from these controls alone.

When to choose it

Reach for this Look when a scene needs a clean, neutral starting point rather than a finished opinion. Mixed lighting is where it fits most easily: practicals, daylight through a window and bounce from a pale wall can share a frame without one source dragging the balance. The same restraint suits interviews, documentary coverage and multi-camera work, where consistency between setups matters more than a signature tone. Material headed for further grading also benefits, because the transform sets contrast, highlight recovery and shadow lift without committing to a hue. Bright skies, glossy product surfaces and shaded interiors gain from the highlight pull and the shadow lift. Skin tones near neutral need little correction. Warm available light and strongly styled color are better served by a Look with warmth built in.

Working with it in Studio

In CineLook Studio the transform arrives as a starting grade, and most sessions need only small trims on top. Exposure and Contrast come first. At 0.08 and 3 points both are gentle, so short moves in either direction stay visible without disturbing the neutral base. Highlights and Shadows carry most of the character at 32 down and 14 up; ease the shadow lift if a scene turns milky, and relax the highlight pull only when speculars should read brighter. Temperature and Tint are absent from the grade, so white balance stays with the user instead of arriving as a cast. Saturation and Vibrance take a final nudge. Film Grain, Bloom and Vignette are app-side adjustments; the .cube LUT export carries Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Temperature, Tint, Saturation, Vibrance and Highlight Rolloff.

How it compares

ARRI Warm is the sibling Look, warmer with a little more contrast. It sits a touch higher in exposure and one point higher in contrast; highlights pull 30 rather than 32, shadows lift 13 rather than 14, so its darks sit deeper. It also adds temperature at 20 and tint at 4, neither present in this Look, plus Bloom at 4. Saturation drops 3 instead of 4, Vibrance gains 8 instead of 7, grain rises to 4 from 3. Pick ARRI Warm for warm available light, golden skin or campaigns wanting glow; keep the CineLook ARRI Natural transform for neutral bases and mixed sources.

Where it fits in a grade

Category and grade place this Look at the start of a chain rather than the end. A camera color science transform of this kind works as a base layer: balance and exposure are settled first, then the Look is applied, then anything meant to define the finished image sits on top. Its soft contrast, open shadows and held highlights preserve headroom, so a finishing print Look still has room to shape the result; applied at the very end, that same openness would read as flat. Treat it as the layer that holds the frame together while the steps above stay free, and skip those steps when a shot is meant to stay plain.

Transform parameters

Against a neutral starting point the CineLook ARRI Natural transform moves exposure +0.08, contrast +3, highlights -32, shadows +14, saturation -4, vibrance +7, film grain +3 and highlight rolloff +48.
